This one day seminar focuses on autism spectrum disorder diagnosis based on the DSM 5, understanding ABA, and understanding Centers of Excellence rules and requirements.  The training is provided free of charge in support of increasing Center of Excellence designations in Eastern Washington  The training is specifically provided for those professionals who are designated to make ASD diagnoses and write ABA prescriptions.  These are physicians and psychologists.  Nevertheless, the training is certainly useful for school district personnel, early intervention staffs, therapists (SLP, OT, PT, psychologists) as they all might be part of a cooperative evaluation and ongoing support of a child and their family.

Dr. Cowan is an Emeritus Clinical Professor in Pediatrics and Psychiatry. Dr. Cowan has been interested in issues related to childhood disability for the past 30 years as both a pediatrician and then a developmental pediatrician.   For the past 20 years, autism has been a particular interest.   Dr. Cowan is now clinically retired but remains active in teaching about ASDs as well as having a few small research projects.

Lin Payton is the ABA Program Manager, Office of Health Care Benefits and Utilization Management, Division of Health Care Services.

All physicians who would like to give children a diagnosis of autism that will qualify them to receive ABA therapy from the Health Care Authority must be present for the full day and will be completing a brief test at the end of the seminar.  We ask that all participants arrive on time.
