Adolescents and Adults
One of the most challenging times for individuals with autism and their families is when they must transition from the security of federally-mandated services through the public school to the uncertainty of adult services.
Questions about postsecondary education, vocational training and employment must be addressed. While entitlement to public education ends at 21, the IDEA requires that transition planning begin at 14, becoming a formal part of the student's IEP.
Transition planning should involve the student, parents and members of the IEP team who work together to help the individual make decisions about his/her path.
ADULTS
Many individuals with so-called "high-functioning autism" (HFA) or Asperger's Syndrome are living independent and productive lives. Even so, the particular challenges of spectrum disorders require support and services to continue through the lifespan. For some, full supports may be necessary; for others, the opportunity to meet with others on the spectrum for support and education may be helpful.
Northwest Autism Center is working for the development of a stronger Inland Northwest community of support for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
